Why was our website down?

In mid-April, we unexpectedly lost access to our website, domain, and DNS hosting account. Despite submitting a service ticket for immediate support, we did not receive a response for nearly a month.

To escalate the issue and speak directly with a representative, the hosting company required enrollment in a costly business plan - an option that was not financially feasible. It’s important to note that this hosting service was set up prior to 2022, with no documentation readily found on the original process.

During the first week of waiting for a response, we contacted our third-party IT provider to explore alternatives. It became clear that we would need to pull the domain and DNS records - something we could do without the host’s approval - and rebuild the website from scratch.

Because developing and coding a website of similar quality was beyond our internal capabilities, we contracted a well-reviewed external developer. Their work took just over two weeks. However, as we prepared to launch, Microsoft notified us that our non-profit status had been revoked, as HOAs are no longer eligible. As per our third-party IT provider, this change would impact the launch.

We submitted two separate escalation requests to appeal this decision, since losing our non-profit status significantly impacts the cost of domain and hosting services. Unfortunately, both appeals were denied after another two-week wait. We have since proceeded with the project at full cost in order to restore web access for the community.

Currently, our developer and IT provider are working through a technical file error, which has further delayed the launch. We are awaiting their resolution and further updates.

In the meantime, our staff and management team have created a temporary website using Wix and a new domain. While not ideal, and it doesn't quite look the same, this stopgap provides a central hub for Lake Chaparral information until the permanent site is back online.

We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work through this issue. A heartfelt thank-you to our staff for taking initiative to get something accessible for the community, despite the ongoing workload prepping for the busy summer season, new initiatives, and release of membership fees.
